Is Nintendo ready to reveal the next installment of the Nintendo DS this Monday?
Rumours are flooding websites all over the internet at the moment, all pointing to a Nintendo announcement this Monday in which they will reveal a redesign of the Nintendo DS - the one spoken of by Nintendo America's head of marketing, Reggie Fils-Aime, last year.
The rumour of a January 16th announcement orginated from import gaming store, Lik-Sang.com, when they posted a news update, claiming they'd received word from a trusted Japanese source. SPOnG continued this by posting more information from their trusted "sources" and suggested that the redesign would be cell-phone inspired, square in shape, and still carry the fliptop screen element. Also, Japanese magazine Famitsu recently teased that a current Nintendo console would be getting a revision, but failed to reveal which one.
There's certainly some credibility to these claims, we think.
The Nintendo DS is almost sold out in Japan, with Nintendo's inventory completely gone - what better time to begin manufacturing the redesign, if they haven't done so already; production of the current DS may have been temporarily halted, thus explaining the shortages.
The Game Boy Advance SP redesign was first revealed to the public in January of 2003, and promptly launched in March - could this same tactic be used again this time 'round?
Nintendo of America have reportedly denied any such announcement to be taking place.
Talking to IGN Yesterday, Nintendo of America had this to say about the DS Redesign Rumors.
Clearly, Nintendo DS continues to be one of the most popular and talked-about video game systems available. and through 2005, some 13 million units have sold worldwide. Nintendo is always looking for ways to improve its games and systems, but we have nothing to announce at this time
Nintendo may release a new design of their Nintendo DS at a later date.
