The games that started it all have just turned 10 years old.. Pockét Monsters Green version and Pockét Monsters Red version were released in Japan 10 years ago today, starting the Pokémon craze we all know.


Pokémon was created in 1996 by Nintendo for their best selling portable video game system, “Game Boy”. Originally released in Japan, Pokemon are a class of unique little Pocket Monsters that battle each other when instructed to do so by their trainer. The original term for Pokeemon was “Pokétto Monstaa”, the coined Japanese term for Pocket Monster. Soon the Japanese shortened the name to “Pokémon”. A Japanese game designer named Satoshi Tajiri invented Pokemon based on childhood memories of collecting bugs in jars and wishing he could make them fight like the monsters in his favorite science fiction movies. The game was so intricate that it took Tajiri six years to develop the Pokémon game. Once released, the rest is history. The overwhelming popularity of the game prompted the creation of a Japanese Pokémon television series and a Japanese Pokémon Collectible Trading Card Game, both of which also became tremendous successes.

The Pokémon phenomenon began in the U.S. in 1998 with the release of the original Red and Blue Game Boy games, the debut of the animated Pokemon television series on Warner Brothers, and the release of the English version of the Pokémon Trading Cards. The Pokemon television series immediately catapulted Kids Warner Brothers to the top of the cable ratings for kids shows.

Starting on February 25, through July 22, 2006 the Pokémon Journey Across America tour, celebrating the property's tenth anniversary, will visit numerous cities across the United States. In addition to a Pokémon tournament, the events will include numerous on-site activities including live costume characters,, a Pokémon Trading Card Game play area, exclusive character downloads for Pokémon video games, and a 10th anniversary lounge to offer fans a look back at Pokémon through the years.

Pokémon's success can be attributed to Pokémon’s incredible appeal to children from diverse cultures and across sex and age barriers. Although originally designed for adolescent boys, Pokémon’s popularity quickly spread to include girls, elementary age school children and even preschoolers. As summarized by Galil Tilden, Nintendo’s Vice President, “Pokméon is much more than a phenomenon – It’s now a children’s entertainment staple here in America and globally… From the video games, to the toys, to the TV series, Pokemon’s staying power is evident in its multifaceted appeal to its broad fan base."

4Kids-Pokémon=No One!

Well as we all know, 4Kids has lost Pokémon rights to Pokémon USA and, as pointed out by a JRBnet User, has removed Pokémon from their various websites.

It seems this has recently happened on both the main 4Kids site (www.4kidsentertainment.com) and on the kid-friendly 4Kids.tv sites. It is unknow when exactly they did this but we think they are moving on now as Pokémon USA picks up the the pace in it's handling of the anime.

We'll post more about this if more info or a press release becomes available.

Pokémon's 10th Annevirsary: Journey Across America

To celebrate its 10th Anniversary Journey Across America, Pokémon USA is giving you a chance to battle against other top Pokémon players in National Championships Qualifying Tournaments. Winners go on to the Pokémon Video Game National Championships in New York City!

To earn a spot at a Qualifying Tournament, test your Pokémon knowledge in the Qualifying Online Challenge. Be among the first 64 registrants to score 80% or higher and you will earn a spot to play at one of 26 regional tournament locations.

The National Qualifying Tournaments will be held at various times at different locations. Those participants in the National Championship Qualifying Tournaments will battle until there is only one winner in each of the 2 age groups (12 and under and 13 and older) for each Qualifying Tournament Location. Those winners (52 winners in all) will advance to the Pokémon Video Game National Championships in New York City!

Prizes incluse a trip to Tokyo, Japan for 4 (includes a $500 Gift card for the Pokémon Center), Nintendo DS's and 5 FUTURE Pokémon games, a cell phone with 5000 mins, custom merchandise, autographed art and more.. Full details, rules, and how to sign-up can be found on the Pokemon.com website...

Japan's Nintendo has been noted that it will launch a travelling amusement park later this year with rides based on Pokemon characters, starting in Taiwan, a report said Saturday.

The Pokémon theme park will open in Taipei for a three-month run from June, aiming to draw a total of one million visitors, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said in its evening edition.

The Nintendo group is considering moving the park later to the United States, Europe and Shanghai, the economic daily added.

The ubiquitous Pokémon characters, originally developed by Nintendo for its "Game Boy" machine, have been made into a television animation series aired in 70 countries and regions.

The Pokémon park was temporarily built last year in the central Japanese city of Nagoya to coincide with the World Exposition held for six months to September. It drew 4.5 million visitors during its half-year run.

Nintendo officials could not be reached to confirm the report, so treat this as a rumor for now. We'll have more info on this as it becomes available.

ニンテンドーDS カンファレンス！ 2006.春

While no formal release date has yet been announced, an official statement was made today at the Nintendo DS Conference! Spring 2006 (ニンテンドーDS カンファレンス！ 2006.春」), promising that the eagerly awaited Pokémon Diamond and Pearl games will be released in Japan sometime before the year ends. This is the first press conference statement regarding the games since the original announcement of the games being in development.

Sadly, no further information on the games was forthcoming.

Japanese fans of Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s dual-screen DS portable game machine may soon be able to surf the Web and watch high-definition television programs on their devices in addition to playing games.

Taking another step in its strategy to develop features that will appeal to more than just hardcore game fans, the Japanese company said on Wednesday it plans to begin selling a Web browser in June and launch a card with a digital television receiver by the end of the year.

Americans will have their first chance to capture Celebi, a Pokémon not previously made available to them. The Pokémon Journey Across America tour, visiting select locations through July 2006, starts Feb. 25 in Miami.

Pokémon Tenth Anniversary US Tour to run through July 2006

Pokémon.com has announced that visitors to the tour can battle to qualify for the Pokémon National Video Game Championship by entering one of two categories- 12 and under or 13 and over. According to the site, 24 winners from each age group will win a trip for two to New York in August to participate in the finals.



According to our friends over at BMG, Pokémon Fan, a publication of Pokémon USA, revealed several more details about the tour. Fans will be able to meet Pikachu, obtain a promotional TCG card and receive the chance to catch Celebi on Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed or LeafGreen.
